I’m currently in the process of learning some songs for a band I’m hoping to be playing with. It’s worth noting that I haven’t been playing my guitar’s seriously for over a year, and I feel like I’ve lost a bit of technique and accuracy.
As part of a process to shape up my playing, I’ve been going over old exercises I used to do. This is one of them. Guitarist Paul Gilbert once said in a video lesson that a good way to warm up is to just empty strum for a bit till you feel a rhythm, something sightly off from what you play. Then riff. Don’t have any preconceived notions of what your going to play, just play.
It’s a fun warm up, and helps you notice areas of your playing that need a bit of brushing up. I can hear in this short clip that I need to get my picking accuracy up, as I was dropping notes like a little bitch.
All in all, I’m loving playing the guitar again.
